Gallery Drip Co. A History;
or, A Fine-Art Curious Person Seeking Like-Minded Folks to Wear Things and Learn About Art Together
I’m decidedly medium at fine art. From drawing to painting, to my hard-earned B in Art History 101 freshman year. I’m bad at remembering dates, have a hard limit of ten myths or biblical stories I can remember at once, sound clumsily amateur, at best, talking about composition and perspective, and care significantly more about how a piece made me feel than its context or materials or technique. But I love it.
My love isn’t that of a sculptor or gallery owner or curator; it’s not just less skillful, talented, and passionate, but also less thoughtful, more nonchalant, and more melodramatic, all at once. More of a mid-level groupie than a fellow musician or a fan club creator or Penny Lane. I love being surrounded by it and betray my budget for original works. My family hates going to museums with me as I go.through.every.room.and.look.at.every.piece.and.read.every.caption. I have significantly more art pieces than frames, and curse the art god’s for the violently unreasonable cost of framing (Love you framers. It’s a vanishing art). And despite my Art History 101 and 102 grades (sorry for misleading you before, they were both bad), I love learning about it- retention be damned.
So what’s a person to do?
Well, there’s another factor at play here. I love fashion and personal style, but live on the ocean side of Bay Area, not known for its stylistic flair but for its soggy weather that cuts to the bone and some claim is the coldest weather known to humans. The only phrase that feels right is “cashmere weather,” but I can only afford so many sweater pants. So, like many of my coastal peers, I capitulate to sweats and cheugy sweaters, and my favorite shearling slippers, to survive the gd summer, and all the other cold parts of the year. But there’s only so long you can keep a person down, and I eventually found the athleisure on the other side of Nike (no hate, I have Nike too, I just like the spice of variety in my life).
If you’ve stuck with me this long, I’m sorry, but also Yay thank you for being on this journey with me!
